dark side of berlin

For this project, I revisited the sites tainted with Germany’s dark history during the Holocaust. The liveliness of these places give a silent but sinister contrast to the unfortunate events that happened at the same location just 80 years ago. Life goes on and we can only hope that these places will hold the significance it should have for future generations to come.
L1. Gleis 17 at Grunewald – almost 50,000 Jews were deported from here to the concentration camps in Poland
R1.Synagogue at Levetzowstrasse – ex synagogue which was used as a transit center for the Jews
L2. Bamberger Strasse – one of the Judnhauserestablishments set up by the Nazis where large number of Jews were housed together in inadequate conditions
R2. Houses of ex-officiers of Sachsenhausen – houses that used to be residential areas for the officers working in the camp
L3. Office Building of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp – administrative office of concentration camps now functions as a tax centre for local residents
L4. Cafe Cinema – ex residential house for a family of Jews. Almost 6000 Stalpersteine or Stumbling Blocks are placed in Berlin, usually in front of the house of a Holocaust victim
